“The 80 Project” is a movement. A movement that relies on collaboration, technology, creativity, and sharing, to create and distribute positive music throughout the world. The main goal of “The 80 Project” is to understand and better collaboration and creativity in the new digital music realm within the creative community.
There are several phases to the project. The initial phase centers on creating a series of instrumentals using an African American derived music production technique called “Sampling & Chopping”. The instrumentals are based upon various themes from the 1980’s and from various audio sources such as: songs, commercials, jingles, and news snippets.
The second phase will rely on the World Wide Web and it’s participants to write, record, and collaborate to enhance the “Sampled and Chopped” instrumentals. Participants are encouraged to document their creative process through live streaming, home video recordings, cell phone /media recording devices.
The third phase will rely on the World Wide Web and it’s participants to critique/vote on contributions using the Internet and social networking applications.
The last phase will showcase the final series of songs through audio downloads and 12 comprehensive “Webisodes”. Webisodes will document the lives and production process of all creators and contributors from each phase of the creation process. Webisodes will serve as a historical highlight focusing on major events and individuals during the 1980’s.Webisodes will focus on unity through music.
The long-term goal is to create eighty songs and webisodes by the end of 2011. All of the songs will be creative, positive, and a testament to the creative community.
